SMO

SMO is tomorrow, as those of you taking should know. Those who did not remember their index numbers can find it outside of the school hall. Bring rough paper(just in case but I think they will provide), your ez-link card(for identification purposes, I think it's required), and a Math Set(they may not allow, but bring in case they do).

It starts at 9.30, be sure to be there by 9.

Good luck to all involved.

Another AK Poem

The poem of Kwek's I am responding to is the one in the post Thanks for Talking!, which can be found in his blog, linked to the AntiKwek poster above.

Another poem I see from you
And I'd say it's your best
But although my critique still holds true
It's better than your rest

Your poem lacks emotion
And I know you've been told
Add some sadness, or elation
Your stanzas are so cold

You say you've been around
And I know you have not
For I have seen the coldest arctic ground
And deserts - searing hot

Indiana Jones, theres no such guy
So how could you two meet?
The tale you tell, it is a lie
And you never left your seat

And if pi were mirrored so
You will never reach halfway
You could read till black holes glow
Or till Kevin becomes gay

So stop the lies, I've had enough
For they are all so fake
Stop these untrue, made-up stuff
You really need to wake

hockey!

alright, lets all post something more useful. like cca achievements!

hahahahha

alright lets talk about the hockey six a side competition that saved me two days from school. OOH! we totally rock!

we got FIRST

RUNNERS UP!

okay. cool eh. it was just a minor comp though. six a side instead of the normal 11 a side. but still we rock. in the group stage, we narrowly lost to vs by 0-1, won northland 2-0, and westwood by about 7-0. so only victoria and ri qualified from the grp (too bad shaw shiuan!) northland didnt win!

oh and then was the quarters or something liddat. so well we were in a real bad grp. bukit panjang government hill, teck whye and sengkang. we won 2-0, 1-0 and lost 0-2 respectively. and so we faced saints for the semis where we won about 2-1, narrowly but surely. and then for the finals, because we won, DUH, we had to face SENGKANG.

which we had lost 2-0 before. but we still tried i guess. besides some mistakes which cost us another similar loss of 0-2. so we settled with a silver. but still...... 1st runners up!

YAY FOR US! YAY FOR PONNING SCHOOL!

The AK Poem

You sit there writing poetry
Thinking that they are nice
Writing of war and infantry
And 1 rhyme would suffice

You use words that do not rhyme
Your meter is so weird
You sound unnatural, time after time
And your poetry is feared

The rhyme is forced, I feel it
And the poetic flow isn't there
Your words mostly do not fit
And your OK verse is spare

You write from the top of your heart
But I write from the bottom of mine
You quickly, surely, defile this art
And I put it back in line

So please, learn to write poems well
For the world is waiting to see
For now, your poems do not sell
And are horrible to me

The Poet Comments
Oh dear. Let me tell you that this poem was churned out in 15-30 minutes. And forced, breaking 2 of my earlier rules. However, what must be done, must be done.

Malaysian Montage with Mr. Jee

I was leafing through some MM photos I took when I suddenly found some of our beloved Math teacher! Look at the photographer in him at work! Mr. Jee scans the scene for a photo...
He aims...
He takes it and looks around...
Before spotting me... :P

How angsty...

Pissing Kwek Off 101

Muggermania

I don’t know what you see in me –
That mugger in dark blue specs
I’m just the normal guy you know, no
Toned deltoids, no tough six-packs!

1 rhyming pair per stanza. Not exactly very good, but it does make writing easier without doing much harm to the poem. Rhyme is SO OBVIOUSLY rhyming for the sake of rhyming, not completely natural.

I don’t go out much,
To the movies or to eat,
And I don’t crash any parties,
Just so new friends to meet!

"Just so new friends to meet"? Do you talk like this every day?

I don’t play com games,
Or trade those cards,
I’m just a no-lifer
Who stays home to mug!

Cards and mug. Half rhyme. Is that even half rhyme?

You know that nerd from across the road?
Yes sir that’s me, I bear his name.
But there’re some things I don’t think I need,
For starters now, there’s money and fame –

There're? THERE'RE?
EDIT: Suhaimy says: There is such a word, but it is no longer used. Doesn't matter. People who need archaic words like there're, thee, and thy to write their poems are all pretentious ones who cannot utilise the variety of modern vocabulary available to them, and resort to such old words to make themselves sound peotic and shakespearean.

I mean it’d be nice to have them too,
As well as a bit more social time,
But then again tell me what’s wrong with me
If I go out with poetry and rhyme?

The double me in the third line looks like a horrible attempt at internal rhyme. And the fourth line is just odd.

And yes I know my socks are high,
But oh I like them that way!
And what’s your problem with my uncool shirt –
It’s not something you see every day!

"It's not something you see every day". I thought this was for good things. Apparently I was wrong.

So I’ll leave off now my dearest friend
Perhaps with a word or two:
It doesn’t matter how I dress or look,
It’s just what I mean to you!

How touching. For the poem as a whole, the meter is rather... strange. Not much rhythm, language not very natural. Go read some Henry Lawson.

You.

I know I’ve met you somewhere,
I’ve got that funny feeling – why!
But where or when or who or how,
I just can’t bring to mind!

Why and mind? Why and mind? Is this free verse?

Aren’t you the barber from fifty-sixth street,
The girl from writing camp?
Or are you my senior from Boys’ Brigade,
Who helped me pitch my tent?

Camp and tent. Camp and tent. Repeat that to yourself, say, fifty times, and tell me if it rhymes.

Your face it looks oh-so-familiar,
But it seems I can’t recall –
How nice how cheeky how open you are,
Or how dark, or how thin, or how tall!

First line missing a comma. Third line needs an extra word or some punctuation. It seems we have made one sacrifice too many for the sake of meter.

Yet that smile you probably gave me,
Is imprinted in my brain,
Although in time – as my mind clutters,
That image may just grow faint!

Brain and faint. If these were on purpose, you would be better off with free verse.

So many people I’ve met around,
So much anonymous kindness I’ve got!
Here today I’m writing it down,
Lest one day they be forgot.

They be forgot. I'll be sure to use that in my everyday conversation.

I still can’t remember where we met,
Or how each other we found.
But remind me if I see you again, and –
In the meantime, see you around!

Each other we found. Talk like Yoda, don't we?

How Poetry should be Written

1. Do not look for your topic, let it come to you.
2. Do not churn out random poems every 15 minutes. Take your time.
3. Do not force rhyme.
4. Take note of the meter.
5. Make your poetry sound natural. Talk like Yoda, do not.
6. Do not make spelling mistakes.

For those unhappy with my criticisms, there are two options below.

1. Ask Junior.
2. Ask me to show you Spoils of War.

You know the play by the Raffles Players--Army Daze? One of our teachers is acting in it, and then I found these pictures on Mr. Tay Woo Chiao's blog... No prizes for guessing who the teacher is (she's the one in the pink and blue dress)...

Forbidden broadway

Forbidden broadway! :) [Apparently, Mr. Tay watches this...] It's supposed to be a parody of Broadway shows, and parodies OTHER shows, like Wicked (Wickeder), The Lion King(The circle of mice instead of The circle of life...) Follies (I'm still weird instead of I'm still here...) and more...
Les miserablés parody--part 1
C'est magnifique! (Original)
At the end of the play (At the end of the day)
Bring it down (Bring him home)

And here's part 2...
Ten years more (One day more)

To understand the humour you have to have some basic knowledge about the plot of Les miserablés first...
